Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a single vehicle crash in Maffra this afternoon.
It is believed the car has left Stratford-Maffra Road just after 3pm and has struck a tree.
The yet to be formally identified male driver has died at the scene, the female passenger will be airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.
The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined at this stage.
