Police arrest man after armed robberies in Melbourne's north-east

A 29-year-old man has been arrested following two attempted armed robberies and a carjacking in Melbourne's north-east early this morning.

It is alleged a man armed with a hammer attempted to rob a service station on Bell Street in Preston about 4.45am and then a service station on Willsmere Road in Kew about 4.55am.

On both occasions the man fled the scene empty-handed and no-one was injured.

Just after 5am, a man had parked his car on Willsmere Road when he was approached by two men and a woman.

One of the men armed with a knife, threatened the man before stealing his car.

A Preston man was arrested this afternoon and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.
