Protective Service Officers (PSO) patrolling a southern suburbs railway station have arrested a man following a fire in Malvern East overnight.
The officers were patrolling Malvern railway station when they noticed a fire at the rear of a garden supply store on Warrigal Road and raised the alarm about 11.20pm.
The properties rear boundary fence was well alight along with a large hedge and timber from inside the yard
As the PSOs made their way to the scene they spotted a man in an adjacent alley.
The 47-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
The Malvern East man has been interviewed and released pending further enquiries.
Stonnington Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating whether there are any links between last night's fire and two other reported fires in the area in the last ten days.
The other two fires involved tree trunks being damaged.
