Police Arrest Man After Serious Assault - Balmain

A man has been arrested after an assault in Sydney's inner west.

About 10am today (Wednesday 2 July 2025), emergency services responded to reports of an assault in the basement of a unit complex on Darling Street, Balmain.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated a 74-year-old man at the scene. He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Officers from Leichhardt Police Area Command were informed that the man was allegedly assaulted by 49-year-old man not known to him.

Several members of the public intervened in the assault and locked the younger man in a storage room until the arrival of police.

The man was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where inquiries are continuing.
