Police arrest man after swimming in ocean to avoid police arrest - Warilla

A man has been arrested after attempting to evade police by swimming in the ocean following a pursuit at Warilla last night.

About 10,30pm (Friday 19 July 2019), police noticed a Mercedes Benz allegedly speeding along Landy Drive and attempted to stop it. The car went through a stop sign and a pursuit was initiated.

It is further alleged the Mercedes went through a red light at the intersection of Pur Pur Street and Shellharbour Road, and the pursuit was terminated.

Shortly afterwards police located the car at Reddall Parade and the occupants were seen to run from the car.

A perimeter was established, and with the assistance of the Dog Squad, one of the occupants was tracked through bushland and onto Warilla Beach. He was seen to enter the southern end of the beach and swim towards Barrack Point.

The Marine Area Command, along with the Toll Ambulance helicopter attended and assisted with the search.

About 45 minutes later the man located in the ocean and was guided back to shore by the helicopter to waiting police.

The 21-year-old man was arrested and taken to Shellharbour Hospital where he remains under police guard.

The woman was later arrested at her home and is currently assisting with inquiries.

Investigations are continuing.
