Police have charged a man after he allegedly attempted to rob a bottle shop in the state’s south last night.
Shortly before 10pm (Saturday 7 December 2019), a man entered a bottle shop, attached to a hotel, on Railway Parade, Engadine, with a stocking over his head.
As he approached the counter police will allege he produced a knife and threatened two staff members-while they were serving a customer- and demanded money.
A manager of the hotel saw what was unfolding and immediately contacted security staff.
Security alerted police who were doing a ‘walk through’ of the hotel at the time and they approached the armed man as they called on him to drop his weapon.
The armed man ran from the location with officers giving chase heading towards Station Street. As he approached the Princes Highway one officer tackled the man and managed to make the arrest.
He was taken to Sutherland Police Station where he was charged with assault with intent to rob armed with offensive weapon, use offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention and resist officer in execution of duty.
While in custody the man complained of shoulder pain.
He was taken to Sutherland Hospital where a bedside hearing to determine bail is expected later today.
