Police arrest second Beechworth escapee

Fugitive Taskforce detectives have arrested a second man who escaped from Beechworth Correctional Facility on 26 July, Victoria Police say.

Geoffrey Pennell, 34, was arrested about 9.45pm this evening in Warrnambool.

Pennell was one of three men, alongside Billy Sperling, 25, and Thomas Smith, 27, to escape the minimum-security facility.

Sperling was arrested in Geelong on 27 July.

Police are still searching for Smith, who is serving time for traffic, property, drug and damage-related offences.

He is described as Caucasian with green eyes, a medium build and about 187cm tall.

It is possible Smith may be travelling in a blue 1988 Mercedes sedan with registration 1G13BT, which was stolen from Beechworth-Everton Road about 3.20am on 26 July.

Police have also released an image of a similar vehicle in the hope someone may recognise it.

Anyone who sights Smith or the car is urged to contact Triple Zero (000) or Crime Stoppers.
