Police arrest woman over 2001 murder of Irene Jones

Unsolved Homicide Unit detectives have arrested a woman over the alleged murder of a South Western Sydney woman nearly 18 years ago.

Emergency services were called to a home on Huntingdale Avenue, Lansvale, about 9.45pm on Friday 2 November 2001, following reports of an aggravated break and enter.

A woman, then aged 27, attended a neighbour's property and contacted police.

Officers attended and located the body of 56-year-old Irene Jones, who was known to the younger woman.

A post mortem examination found Irene died from strangulation and a stab wound to the neck.

Local police and Homicide Squad detectives conducted numerous inquiries at the time, however, no one was charged over her murder.

Following a 2007 Inquest, the NSW Coroner referred the case to the Unsolved Homicide Unit for future re-investigation.

In 2017, detectives from the Unsolved Homicide Unit commenced a re-investigation under Strike Force Trancas II.

Following extensive inquiries, strike force detectives arrested a 45-year-old woman outside a unit at Bondi Junction about 7.45am today (Tuesday 24 September 2019).

She has been taken to Waverley Police Station, where she is expected to be charged with murder.
