Police assaulted during arrest of man in Loftus

A man will appear in court today after allegedly assaulting police during his arrest in the Sutherland Shire yesterday, NSW Police say.

Police attended a home on Loftus Road, Loftus, about 7.20pm today to arrest a 22-year-old man for five outstanding warrants.

Police entered the home through the front door and will allege the man ran out of the house into the backyard towards the back fence.

A NSW Police Dog and handler, and a policeman from Sutherland Local Area Command, gave chase and caught the man at the rear fence.

Police will allege the man struck one of the officers in the eye with his elbow while attempting to climb the fence.

With the assistance of the Police Dog the man was arrested and taken to Sutherland Police Station.

He was charged with the five warrants and assault police occasioning actual bodily harm, assault police, and resist arrest.

He was refused bail and will appear in Sutherland Local Court tomorrow.

The NSW Police Dog Squad officer suffered a laceration to his eye, and the officer from Sutherland suffered a laceration to his arm.

The 22-year-old man received a minor laceration to his thigh from the Police Dog.
