Police Boost Delayed: $2.8M Ads, No Training Funds

Liberal Party Victoria

The Allan Labor Government has allocated $2.8 million for police recruitment advertising, but no new funding has been provided to train or support new recruits.

At the Public Accounts and Estimates Committee hearing, the depth of Victoria Police's crisis was laid bare:

  • 1,100 police vacancies
  • 700 officers on workers compensation
  • 300 senior officers expected to retire early
  • No additional funding for the Police Academy

Despite a 16.1 per cent surge in reported crime since 2023, the 2025-26 Budget fails to invest in the resources needed to train and retain officers. Instead, Labor is spending millions on glossy ads while ignoring the operational backbone of policing.

Stations are closing front counters, patrols are being cut, and experienced officers are leaving for better pay and conditions in other states. Morale is at an all-time low.

Shadow Minister for Police, David Southwick said: "This government is all spin and no substance. You can't keep Victorians safe with empty slogans and shrinking police numbers. We need action not just ads."

"Victorians can't wait five years for a fully staffed police force. They need real investment in training, retention, and frontline support now.

"Labor can't manage community safety and Victorians are paying the price."
