A driver has been charged following an investigation into a fatal crash near Newcastle at the weekend.
About 11.15pm on Saturday 30 August 2025, emergency services were called to Maitland Road, Mayfield East, following reports of a crash.
At the scene, police were told a Toyota Corolla left the road and struck a power pole, catching alight on impact.
The 24-year-old driver and a 19-year-old passenger were assisted from the vehicle by members of the public.
Both men were taken to the John Hunter Hospital suffering minor injuries.
Two remaining passengers – men aged 20 and 21 – were taken to the John Hunter Hospital where they later died.
Officers attached to Newcastle City Police District established a crime scene, with inquiries continued by the Crash Investigation Unit.
Earlier today (Tuesday 2 September 2025), police charged the 24-year-old man with eight offences,
- Dangerous driving occasioning death - drive manner dangerous (two counts)
- Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm - drive manner dangerous
- Negligent driving (occasioning death) (two counts)
- Negligent driving (occasions grievous bodily harm)
- Negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), and
- Cause bodily harm by misconduct, in charge of motor vehicle.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 tomorrow (Wednesday 3 September 2025).
