Police charge driver over fail to stop crash near Berry

A man has been charged following an investigation by the Crash Investigation Unit into an alleged fail to stop crash near Berry earlier this year.

Just after 10.30pm on Saturday 24 April 2021, a Triton utility travelling south and a Holden Rodeo utility travelling north on the Princes Highway, Jaspers Brush, collided near the Strongs Road Overpass.

Following the initial impact, the Triton and a Mitsubishi ASX also travelling south collided, before the Triton hit a concrete barrier.

Police will allege the Holden driver did not stop and drove from the scene.

The Triton driver, a 54-year-old man, suffered serious leg injuries and was airlifted to St George Hospital for treatment.

His passenger, a 53-year-old woman, and the Mitsubishi driver, a 20-year-old woman, were not seriously injured.

Officers from South Coast Police District established a crime scene which was examined by investigators from the Crash Investigation Unit.

A short time later, the Holden Rodeo was found unattended on North Street, Berry, with its number plate removed. It was seized for further forensic examination.

Following inquiries, a 47-year-old man was arrested today (Friday 27 August 2021).

He was charged with fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact cause grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous, negligent driving occasions grievous bodily harm, do act intending to pervert the course of justice, false representation result in police investigation, fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury and not keep left of dividing line-not class B/C vehicle.

The Camden man was refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 28 August 2021).
