Police charge five after affray, officer assaulted - Haymarket

Five people have been charged after a police officer was assaulted while responding to an affray in Sydney's CBD this morning.

About 2am (Sunday 2 June 2019), police were called to a licensed premises on the corner of Pitt and Goulburn Streets, Haymarket, after reports of a fight between a group of people.

It will be alleged a 29-year-old man and 30-year-old woman were assaulted after an argument with a group of five people.

The man suffered bruising and cuts to his head and face, and the woman suffered minor head injuries. Neither required hospitalisation.

Four men were detained by security until officers from Sydney City Police Area Command attended.

It will be alleged while police were conducting inquiries, a 26-year-old woman grabbed a male Constable around the throat.

When another male Constable attempted to restrain the woman, a 24-year-old man pulled him away, causing the officer to fall over.

Further police arrived, and the four men – aged 24, 26, 27, and 28 – and woman – aged 26 – were arrested and taken to Day Street Police Station.

Neither officer required hospitalisation.

The woman has been charged with assault police in execution of duty (without actual bodily harm) and granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 26 June 2019.

The 24-year-old man has been charged with assault occasioning ABH in company, common assault, assault police officer in execution of duty cause ABH, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, and affray. He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Bail Court via AVL today (Sunday 2 June 2019).

The three other men were all charged with assault occasioning ABH (x2), common assault, and affray. They were granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday 26 June 2019.
