Police charge man after assaulting an officer - Inner West

A man has been charged after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Sydney's Inner West yesterday.

About 11.25am (Wednesday 6 January 2021), officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command attempted to speak to a man on Marrickville Road, Marrickville, when he allegedly walked away.

Police observed the man open a drink container he was carrying and begin pouring out a liquid.

As police approached, the man allegedly struck an officer in the face and chest and ran from the scene.

With assistance from the Dog Unit and Pol Air, a perimeter was established around a home on Central Avenue, and the 20-year-old man arrested a short time later.

Upon searching the man, police allegedly found a credit card, mail and a small amount of cash.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with assault officer in execution of duty, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, possess prohibited drug, trespass and goods in personal custody suspected being stolen (not motor vehicle).

The man, from Moorebank, was refused bail to appear in Parramatta Local Court today (Thursday 7 January 2021).

The female Constable was not injured during the incident.
