Police charge man after climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge

A protestor has been arrested and charged after he climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge this morning.

About 6.15am (Sunday 7 July 2019), police attended the Sydney Harbour Bridge after receiving information a man was seen climbing the arch carrying a banner.

It appears the man parked his car on the northern end of the bridge, blocking traffic, before commencing his climb.

Specialist officers from the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit attended and were able to assist the 33-year-old man down.

He was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with damage, disruption or obstruction of Sydney Harbour Bridge. This offence carries a maximum fine of $22 000 and/or two years imprisonment.

He was refused bail and is due to appear in Central Local Court tomorrow (Monday 7 July 2019).

Traffic on the Cahill Expressway was disrupted for about an hour.
