Police charge man after fatal crash at Lake Illawarra

A man will front court today, charged following a fatal crash in the State's Illawarra region last night.

About 10pm yesterday (Sunday January 21 2024), emergency services were called to a two-vehicle crash involving a truck and motorcycle scooter in the southbound lane of the Princes Highway, Dunmore, 12km north-east of Shellharbour.

Police will allege the heavy rigid truck collided with the rear of the motorcycle scooter, approximately 1 km south of the Shellharbour Road overpass.

Two females were ejected from the scooter, the pillion passenger – believed to be a 23-year-old woman - died at the scene.

The woman is yet to be formally identified.

NSW Ambulance Service paramedics responded treating the 23-year-old female rider for shoulder injuries and significant grazes. She was airlifted to St George Hospital in a serious condition.

Officers attached to Southern and metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit attended, establishing a crime scene, before commencing investigations.

The 48-year-old male truck driver was taken for mandatory testing, before being conveyed to Oak Flats Police Station.

The man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death and cause bodily harm by misconduct.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Monday 22 January 2024).

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
