A man will face court charged after allegedly failing to assist following a fatal crash in the state's north.
Just after 10.30pm on Monday (30 March 2026), emergency services were called to the intersection of Heffron Street and Oxley Street, Tweed Heads South, following reports of a sedan had rolled.
Officers attached to Tweed-Byron Police District attended and were told the vehicle had rolled after crashing into rocks at the intersection.
NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the front seat passenger – a man believed to be aged in his 30s – at the scene; however, he could not be revived. He is yet to be formally identified.
The driver left the scene prior to police arrival.
Police established a crime scene and commenced an investigation under Strike Force Dartglen, with the assistance from Crash Investigation Unit, to locate the driver.
Following inquiries, yesterday (Wednesday 1 April 2026), a 38-year-old man was arrested at Tweed Heads Police Station where he was charged with:
- Dangerous driving occasioning death-drive under influence
- Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death
- Dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous
- Negligent driving (occasioning death)
- Not stop before lights at red light (not toll booth)-not motor vehicle
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 1 today (Thursday 2 April 2026).
