Police Charge Man After Fatal Crash Near Bega

A man has been charged following a fatal crash in the state's south in July.

About 10.30am on Monday 21 July 2025, police were called to Mount Darragh Road, Mount Darragh, about 50km west of Merimbula, following reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Emergency services responded to find a car had left the roadway, gone down an embankment and struck a tree.

The front-seat passenger – a 25-year-old man – could not be revived and died at the scene.

The driver – a 26-year-old man – was treated at Bega Hospital before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a stable condition.

A second passenger – a 24-year-old man – was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Officers attached to South Coast Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation, with assistance from the Crash Investigation Unit.

About 3pm today (Wednesday 3 September 2025) police arrested a 24-year-old man at Sydney Airport following reports he was attempting to leave the country.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station and charged with negligent driving occasioning death.

The 24-year-old was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 4 September 2025.
