Police charge man after fatal hit and run - Warners Bay

A teenager has died and a man charged with dangerous driving, after an alleged hit and run in Lake Macquarie overnight.

Shortly after midnight (Saturday 29 July 2023), officers attached to Lake Macquarie Police District were called to Macquarie Road at Warners Bay, about 800m north of the Medcalf Street intersection, after reports of a crash which occurred about 5.30pm on Friday 28 July 2023.

On inspection, officers found an electric scooter nearby and teenage boy unresponsive down an embankment.

The boy died at the scene; he is yet to be formally identified.

Police established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Hunter Crash Investigation Unit.

Following inquiries, a 21-year-old man was arrested at a Maryland home about an hour later.

He was taken to Belmont Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death-drive manner dangerous, negligent driving (occasioning death), and fail to stop & assist after vehicle impact causing death.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Belmont Local Court on Wednesday 13 September 2023.

The man's licence has been suspended.
