Police Charge Man After Hit And Run At Byron Bay

A man been charged after and alleged hit and run and assault in the state's north.

About 6.20am today (Friday 20 March 2026), emergency services were called to a property on Fowlers Lane, Coorabell, following reports two people have been run over by a car.

Officers attached to Tweed Byron Police District attended and were told two men – aged 38 and 54 – were allegedly run over by a car, trapping the 54-year-old underneath.

Police will allege, the driver exited his vehicle and strangled the 38-year-old man, before driving from the scene.

A passerby rendered first aid to the men, before NSW Ambulance paramedics attended.

The 54-year-old man was treated for significant facial and upper body injuries and taken to Gold Coast Hospital in a critical condition.

The 38-year-old man was treated for head injuries and taken to Tweed Valley Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver – a 41-year-old man – was stopped arrested a short time later in Mullumbimy and taken to Byron Bay Police Station.

Police seized the vehicle to undergo forensic examination.

The 41-year-old man was charged with two counts of wound person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 1 tomorrow (Saturday 21 March 2026).
