Police Charge Man After New Year's Day Sexual Assault

Melbourne Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have charged a man following an alleged sexual assault of a woman in Melbourne East on New Year's Day.

Investigators allege the sexual assault took place in Corrs Lane about 4.30am on 1 January 2026.

It is alleged the victim was with friends at a nightclub when a man helped her from the dance floor after she fell.

The same man allegedly sexually assaulted the woman shortly after in the laneway.

Following a thorough investigation by detectives a 22-year-old man was arrested at Sydney International Airport about 12pm on Sunday 4 January.

He was extradited to Melbourne on Monday night.

The French National has been charged with 2 x counts of Rape, sexual assault, recklessly cause injury, common assault, 2 x unlicenced driving.

He is remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on 10 April.
