Police charge man after pursuit at Wollongong

Man charged following a pursuit in the Wollongong and Lake Illawarra area today.

About 10.40am (Tuesday 18 August 2020), officers from the Southern Region Enforcement Squad attempted to stop a Holden Commodore on Myuna Way, in the Wollongong suburb of Mangerton.

It is alleged the driver failed to stop before crashing into a police vehicle and driving away on Mangerton Road.

A pursuit was initiated, travelling through the southern Wollongong area and into the northern suburbs of Lake Illawarra; however it, was terminated at Albion Park Rail due to safety concerns

With the assistance of PolAir the vehicle was monitored and police located the Holden driving on Northcliff Drive, Warrawong, where the driver, a 36-year-old man, was arrested.

Upon searching the vehicle, police allegedly seized an electronic stun device and a small amount of methylamphetamine.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc., possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, possess prohibited drug, and possess housebreaking implements.

Two arrest warrants for traffic and property offences were also executed.

The Mangerton man was refused bail to appear in Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Wednesday 19 August 2020).
