A man has been charged following a pursuit in Riverina region last week.
About 3.40pm on Friday 25 September 2026, officers attached to Murrumbidgee Police District attempted to stop a car on the Sturt Highway, Hay.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.
During the pursuit, police allege the driver threw drink cans out of the window.
Police followed the vehicle onto a dirt road, where the pursuit was terminated before the car crashed into a fence, allegedly causing damage to it.
The driver - a 22-year-old man - was arrested at the scene and police seized a knife, allegedly belonging to the man, from inside the car.
He was taken to Griffith Police Station where he was charged with:
- Police pursuit - not stop - drive recklessly,
- Throw missile at police officer executing duty no actual bodily harm,
- Intentionally throw object at vehicle/vessel risk safety,
- Destroy or damage property more than $2000 and less than $5000, and
- Custody of knife in public place.
The man was refused bail to appear at Bail Division Court 5 on Saturday 26 September 2026, where he was formally refused bail to appear at Griffith Local Court on Wednesday 7 October 2026.
