Police Charge Man After Pursuit Through Tamworth

A man has been charged following an alleged pursuit in the state's northeast overnight.

About 7.35pm yesterday (Thursday 12 March 2026), officers attached to Oxley Police District attempted to stop a Nissan utility on Grant Street, South Tamworth, for roadside testing when the vehicle allegedly failed to stop.

When the driver allegedly ignored police direction to stop, a pursuit was initiated.

The pursuit continued through Central Avenue, David Street and others before reaching the Oxley Highway, Duri Road and Burgmanns Lane, allegedly travelling at speeds over 120km/hr in a signposted 60km/hr zone.

Shortly after, the pursuit was terminated for safety reasons.

Police arrested the driver – a 23-year-old man – at Tamworth Police Station about 8.30pm the same day (Thursday 12 March 2026), where he undertook a drug test, allegedly returning a positive result for cocaine.

The man was charged with fail to comply with request or signal to stop vehicle, police pursuit - not stop - drive dangerously, drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous, and Class A motor vehicle exceed speed greater than 45 km/h - Estimated.

He was granted conditional bail to face Tamworth Local Court on Monday 13 April 2026.
