Police charge man after series of commercial burglaries

Detectives from the Moorabbin Criminal Investigation Unit yesterday charged an alleged recidivist burglar following an intensive investigation into a spate of commercial burglaries in Melbourne's south east suburbs.

It is alleged a 43-year-old Hampton East man broke into 14 properties in Brighton, Mentone, Highett, and Moorabbin since late January stealing a combined total of approximately $7,400 cash.

He has been charged with a total of 31 offences including 14 counts of burglary, 12 counts of theft, three counts of attempted theft and two counts of attempted burglary.

The man has been remanded to appear before the Moorabbin Magistrates Court on 7 April 2022.

Quotes attributed to Senior Sergeant Jason Owen:

"Theft can sometimes seem like a victimless crime however for local shop and business owners the financial and emotional turmoil can last far longer than any physical damage."

"Police will continue to work hard in the Moorabbin and Bay Side areas to identify, arrest and hold to account anyone who looks to make a quick buck through theft."
