Police charge man after serious domestic-related assault - Smithfield

A man will face court today charged after allegedly seriously assaulting a woman, who now in a serious condition in a south western Sydney hospital.

About 7.45pm yesterday (Wednesday 12 February 2020), police and emergency services were called to a home on Neville Street, Smithfield, following reports of a domestic-related assault between a 27-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman.

On arrival, officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command located the woman with severe facial injuries and was having difficulty breathing.

Police rendered first aid until the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics, who took the woman to Liverpool Hospital for treatment to facial fractures.

She is expected to undergo surgery later today (Thursday 13 February 2020), with an extended medical recovery expected.

A crime scene was established at the home, which has been examined by specialist forensic officers, while Fairfield City detectives commenced an investigation.

The man was arrested and taken to Fairfield Police Station, where he was charged with cause grievous bodily harm to person with intent (DV).

He has been refused bail to appear at Fairfield Local Court later today.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
