Police charge man over alleged carjacking - Eastgardens

A man has been charged following investigations into an alleged carjacking at Eastgardens yesterday.

About 4.45pm (Monday 11 March 2019), a 52-year-old woman got into her 2015 Porsche Macan 4WD which was parked on the top level of a shopping centre in Eastgardens.

As she was starting the car a man jumped into the front passenger seat and threatened the woman with a device that she believed may have been a stun gun.

He told the woman to drive, however, she jumped out of the car and was assisted by members of the public.

The man jumped into the driver's seat and drove the Porsche from the carpark.

Officers from Botany Bay Police Area Command attended and commenced inquiries. The woman's mobile phone was still in the car and officers tracked the vehicle to Wentworth Avenue, Eastlakes.

Assisting Highway Patrol officers located a 42-year-old man coming out of bushes on Wentworth Avenue and he was arrested.

He was taken to Mascot Police Station where he was later charged with aggravated take motor vehicle with person in it or armed with weapon and drive motor vehicle during disqualification period.

He was refused bail and will appear in Central Local Court today (Tuesday 12 March 2019).

Inquiries are continuing into the identity of a possible co-offender.
