Police charge man over alleged homemade firearm possession in Ashfield

Police have charged a man after he was allegedly found in possession of a homemade firearm and a knife, NSW Police say.

About 7.15pm today, police will allege they saw an 18-year-old man standing at a bus stop on Parramatta Road, Haberfield.

The man boarded a bus which police then pulled over on Parramatta Road, near Flood Street, Leichardt.

Officers spoke to the man and he was removed from the bus and searched. Police will allege they located a knife and a staple gun with a barrel attached capable of firing .22 calibre rounds.

He was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where he was interviewed and charged with firearm and ammunition possession, having custody of a knife in a public place, and breach of bail.

He was refused bail and will appear in Newtown Local Court today tomorrow.
