Police Charge Man Over Attempted Murder - Surry Hills

A man has been charged after the alleged attempted murder of a man in Surry Hills earlier this week.

About 3pm on Wednesday 4 March 2026, an unknown man allegedly armed with a bike chain attempted to strangle a 26-year-old man on Wentworth Street, Surry Hills.

The man managed to free himself, before the unknown man assaulted him and left the location.

Officers attached to Surry Hills Police Area Command attended, along with NSW Ambulance paramedics who treated the man before he was taken to hospital for further treatment.

A crime scene was established and an investigation into the incident commenced.

Around 7pm yesterday (Thursday 5 March 2026), a 35-year-old man was arrested at Kings Cross Police Station.

He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was charged with attempt to strangle/suffocate with intent to murder, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and stalk/intimidate intend fear physical harm.

He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 7 today (Friday 6 March 2026).
