Police charge man over domestic violence incident at Dapto

A man will face court today following an alleged domestic violence incident south of Wollongong.

About 5.30pm yesterday (Tuesday 29 October 2019), Triple Zero (000) were contacted due to concerns about a woman at a home on the Princes Highway at Dapto.

Police will allege a 28-year-old man made a number of threats, and officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District arrived at the location shortly after and attempted to negotiate with the man.

A short time later, the man was seen leaving the property with a pole in one hand and a bag in the other.

He was approached by a police dog handler on Jerematta Street, before running through a parkland and onto the Princes Highway.

Police approached the man on the Princes Highway, where he allegedly ripped off his shirt before producing a large kitchen knife and waving it towards police.

The man was arrested shortly after and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station, where he was charged with armed with intent to commit indictable offence, use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence, resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, offensive behaviour, and breach Apprehended Violence Order (AVO).

A child at the location was not harmed and has been removed from the premises into the care of a relative.

The man was refused bail and is due to face Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 30 October 2019).

Police inquiries are continuing and further charges are expected to be laid.
