Police Charge Man Over Firearms Offences At Wollongong

A man has been charged following an investigation into alleged firearm offences in the Illawarra.

About 2.45pm on Monday 23 June 2025, officers from the Wollongong Police District Crime team attended a house in Galong Crescent, Koonawarra, to conduct a Firearms Prohibition Order compliance check, as part of an ongoing investigation.

During the search, police allegedly located a shortened bolt-action rifle and more than 50 rounds of various calibre ammunition.

The items were seized and will undergo a forensic examination.

Following inquiries, about 7.40pm last night (Thursday 26 June 2025), police conducted a vehicle stop at a shopping centre in Shellharbour and arrested a 37-year-old man.

During a search of the man and the vehicle, police located approximately 3.3 grams of white powder, which police will allege in Court to be methylamphetamine.

He was taken Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with eight offences:

  • Acquire unregistered firearm,
  • Acquire firearm – no licence,
  • Acquire firearm – subject to prohibition order,
  • Possess loaded firearm in a public place,
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority,
  • Acquire ammunition subject to prohibition order,
  • Not keep firearm safely, and
  • Possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear before Wollongong Local Court later today (Friday 27 June 2025).
