Police Charge Man With Hate Crime At Bankstown

A man has been charged over an assault that was allegedly religiously motivated in Sydney's south west.

About 10.20am today (Saturday 24 January 2026), officers from the Police Transport Command responded to reports of an assault on South Terrace, Bankstown.

Police were informed that a 51-year-old man – in company with several other males – were handing out flyers of a religious nature.

The man has allegedly become involved in an argument with another man, who had been walking past, about the flyers.

During the argument, the 51-year-old man was allegedly assaulted by the man.

Shortly after midday, a 40-year-old man approached officers on patrol at Bankstown Railway Station. He was placed under arrest and taken to Bankstown Police Station, where he was charged with common assault and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Bankstown Local Court on Thursday 26 February 2026.

The older man did not require any medical treatment.

The two men are not known to one another.
