Police charge man with theft from motel room at Albury

A man has been charged after allegedly stealing from another man as he slept in the state's south.

About 4.30am on Wednesday 25 February 2021, two men allegedly broke into a motel room on Wagga Road, Lavington, and stole personal belongings.

It's alleged the items belonged to a 63-year-old man who is undergoing ongoing medical treatment and was asleep in the room at the time.

The matter was reported to police and officers from Murray River Police District commenced inquiries.

Following inquiries, about 5.45pm yesterday (Monday 1 March 2021), a 25-year-old man was arrested at the same motel and taken to Albury Police Station.

He was charged with aggravated break and enter and two counts of obtain financial benefit by deception.

The man was refused bail to appear in Albury Local Court today (Tuesday 2 March 2021).

It's alleged the younger man used the older man's bank cards at numerous locations and withdrew $4,000 from a nearby ATM.

Inquiries are continuing to locate the second man.
