Police charge man with wounding in East Devonport overnight

Police have charged a 22 year old Devonport man with wounding following an incident in East Devonport in the early hours of this morning.

Around 2am this morning, an argument between two men known to each other developed into a physical altercation, resulting in a 21 year old East Devonport man receiving stab wounds to his abdomen and chest.

Police and emergency services were called to the scene by witnesses and the injured man was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery for his injuries. The man is currently in a stable condition and is expected to recover from his injuries.

The charged man was found in Devonport shortly after the incident and was taken into custody by police.

It is believed that a knife was used during the wounding and was discarded into the Mersey River near the Victoria Bridge.

Police divers will search for the knife in the river in the coming days. Anyone who sees an increased police presence in the area is assured the search is planned.

The 22 year old charged man has been detained in custody and will appear before the court later today.
