Police charge teen over assault of officer at Lake Illawarra

A teenage boy has been charged over the alleged assault of a police officer in the Lake Illawarra region last year.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were conducting patrols along Ena Avenue, Avondale, about 5.50pm on Thursday 22 September 2022, when they stopped an unregistered scooter being ridden by two males.

As they ran from police, one allegedly swung a motorcycle helmet at a male senior constable hitting him in the face and knocking him unconscious.

Nearby residents came to the officer's aid, before he was able to call for assistance.

He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before taken to Wollongong Hospital in a serious but stable condition where he was treated for facial fractures and a bleed on the brain.

Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District commenced an investigation into the incident.

Following extensive inquiries, police arrested a 16-year-old boy at a home at Horsley on Tuesday 10 January 2023.

He was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with use unregistered registrable Class A motor vehicle on road, and cause grievous bodily harm to police officer on duty reckless as to actual bodily harm – serious indictable offence.

The boy was granted strict conditional bail to appear at a children's court today (Tuesday 31 January 2023).
