Police charge two with stealing elderly woman's handbag - Warrawong

A man and woman have been charged after allegedly stealing the handbag of an elderly woman earlier this week.

About 1.15pm Tuesday (17 March 2020), an 89-year-old woman was getting into her car at a shopping centre in Warrawong, when a man allegedly snatched her handbag from the back seat, before fleeing in a car.

Officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District Anti-Theft Unit commenced an investigation.

The woman and her friend, also aged in her late 80s, were not injured as a result of the incident.

Following inquiries, about 1pm yesterday (Wednesday 18 March 2020) a 42-year-old man was arrested at a home in Port Kembla.

The man was taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station and charged with steal from person. He was refused bail and is due to face Wollongong Local Court today (Thursday 19 March 2020).

A 41-year-old woman, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, handed herself in to Lake Illawarra yesterday afternoon.

The woman was charged with steal from person. She was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Port Kembla Court on 3 June 2020.
