Police continue to appeal for assistance following Beaumaris assault

Glen Eira-Bayside Crime Investigation Unit detectives are seeking help to identify a man following an assault on a fisherman in Beaumaris last week, Victoria Police say.

It is understood the 44-year-old victim was approached by a man while fishing off the Beaumaris Yacht Club pier about 11.45pm on 26 July.

The Springvale man turned his attention to baiting his hook when he was suddenly hit in the back of the head with a tomahawk.

The offender then fled, dropping the axe.

Despite his injuries, the victim managed to pick it up and return to his Springvale home, where his family called an ambulance.

He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening head injuries.

Detectives are treating the incident as a random and unprovoked attack and have today released a composite image of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived as Caucasian in appearance and about 20 years old with a slim build and was wearing a hoody.

Detectives also wish to hear from three men who the victim spoke to following the attack.

The men, all perceived as being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, were loading fishing gear from a vehicle at the gate of the Beaumaris Motor Yacht Club at the time.

Police do not believe they were involved in the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash cam footage or noticed any suspicious behaviour in the area is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
