Police Dogs Nab 8 Offenders in One Week

Eight people have been charged with 16 property-related offences after being located by Police Dogs Duke and DJ since 17 January.

On 20 January, two 15-year-old boys were arrested following a series of incidents in Bentley Park.

It will be alleged the boys were part of a group who were disturbed by residents while attempting to break into two homes before breaking into a third and attempting to steal a vehicle.

The group were tracked by PD Duke and his handler and the boys were arrested by Tactical Crime Squad officers on Miltona Street a short time later.

The 15-year-old Atherton boy was charged with two counts of attempted enter dwelling with intent at night, and one count of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The other 15-year-old from was charged with two counts of attempted enter dwelling with intent at night, and one count each of attempted unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possess thing for use in connection with offence, and enter dwelling with intent by break at night.

Both appeared in the Cairns Childrens Court on 20 January.

On 21 January, three boys aged 15, 16 and 17 were arrested following the alleged theft and dangerous driving of a Hyundai Veloster, a Hyundai Tuscon and an Audi 95.

The boys were tracked by Police Dog DJ and his handler after allegedly fleeing from the stolen Hyundai Veloster abandoned on Bates Street just after 1.30am.

One boy was located in bushland while the other two were arrested inside a property nearby.

The boys have been charged with a total of four counts of unlawful use of motor vehicle, one of enter dwelling and one of receiving tainted property.

The 15-year-old boy has been denied bail and will appear before the Cairns Childrens Court today, 21 January.

The 16 and 17-year-old boys are due to appear before the Cairns Childrens Court on 28 January.

On 17 January, PD Duke and his handler located three teenage boys allegedly involved with a stolen Suzuki Swift.

The boys aged 16, 15 and 14-years-old have been charged with four counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, one count each of fraud, receiving tainted property, enter premises and wilful damage.

Officer in Charge of the Far North Dog Squad Sergeant Dan Fysh said the dogs and handlers work incredibly hard with other officers in the region to safely bring people into custody.

"We work seamlessly with other police, particularly our dedicated Tactical Crime Squad to locate offenders, take them into custody, and reduce the harm they cause people in our community," Sergeant Fysh said.

"Jumping fences, tracking through creeks and thick bushland can be extremely difficult in this climate, but as members of this community themselves these officers are highly motivated to locate offenders.

"The dogs and their handlers do an outstanding job and are a valued resources in the Far North."
