Police experience for Parole Board

A new member with policing experience will soon be added to the Parole Board under legislation that has today successfully passed the second reading stage in the Legislative Council.

This is an important measure to ensure community safety remains at the core of any Parole Board decision.

The amendment will fulfil a commitment made during the 2018 State election to introduce legislation to ensure that a member with policing experience is represented on the Parole Board, in the same way that a victims of crime representative has been included by our Government.

Police are at the frontline of crime in Tasmania and this amendment provides for a former police officer to have an active role in decisions made about prisoners’ suitability for parole.
