Police find gun, knives and drugs in car at RTB

Police in the Shoalhaven have arrested a man and seized a gun, knives and drugs after stopping a car for a random breath test (RBT).

Earlier Saturday, as part of Operation Slow Down, Traffic and Highway Patrol officers were conducting mobile RBT duties on the Princes Highway at South Nowra.

Around 12.30am, police stopped a maroon Hyundai excel sedan for the purpose of a random breath test.

After speaking to the driver – a 24-year-old man – officers searched the vehicle. Inside the car, police located a loaded shortened .22 calibre rifle and 40 grams of cannabis. They also found a number of knives taped to the man’s body.

The 24-year-old was arrested and taken to Nowra Police Station, where he was charged with numerous weapon, drug and traffic offences.

He has been refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Nowra Local Court later today.

Operation Slow Down, the state’s October long weekend road safety campaign, started at 12.01am Friday, and will continue until 11.59pm on Monday. Double demerits will be in place over the entire long weekend for all speeding, seatbelt and motorcycle-helmet offences.
