Police investigate after woman fatally stabbed at Wollongong

A man is in custody after a woman was found with fatal stab wounds in her Wollongong home overnight.

Just after midnight (Wednesday 1 January 2020), officers attached to Wollongong Police District stopped a vehicle on Nicholson Street, Woonona, for a random breath test.

As police approached, the vehicle drove off before hitting a guard rail nearby and the driver, a 56-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.

After speaking with the man, additional officers attended a unit on Campbell Street, Woonona, where they found a 51-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. She was unable to be revived and was declared deceased.

Crime scenes were established at the crash site and the unit with both being forensically examined by specialist officers.

The man was taken to hospital under police guard after suffering minor injuries in the crash.

He was treated and taken to Wollongong Police Station; however, he has since returned to hospital under police guard for further treatment.

Detectives from Wollongong Police District have established Strike Force Carrela to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.
