Police investigate car theft and deceptions

Police are investigating following a theft of a ute and subsequent deceptions earlier this year, Victoria Police say.

A black Mitsubishi Triton ute was stolen from a construction site on Florence Road, Surrey Hills on Tuesday 31 January.

The ute contained the victim’s personal property including his wallet and ID, which was subsequently used to create a fake Victorian driver’s licence.

Investigators believe an unknown man attended a shopping centre in Maribyrnong on Tuesday 7 February.

He entered a store and used the fraudulent licence to set up an account and walked out with a new iPhone 7.

The man then visited another store where he purchased two phone accounts and obtained two more new iPhone 7 handsets.

A further seven iPhone 7s were purchased by the man using the victim’s details and sent to a post office in Taylors Lakes.

Investigators have released CCTV footage of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

He is perceived to be European in appearance, aged in his 20s and of medium build.

At the time of the incident he was wearing a white shirt with black stripes, a black hat, dark cargo pants and black shoes.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
