Police are investigating a serious pedestrian crash on the Brooker Highway at Derwent Park this morning, Tasmania Police say.
A 73 year old man from New Zealand was struck by a south bound maroon Holden Captiva wagon on the Brooker Highway, just north of Derwent Park Road, about 7am this morning.
First aid was performed at the scene by members of the public, Police and Ambulance Tasmania. The man was then conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious condition.
The wagon was being driven by a 56 year old man from the northern suburbs. He was the only occupant in the vehicle and was not injured in the collision. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still being investigated, it is unclear as to why the 73 year old man was on the road at the time.
The left lane of south bound traffic on the Brooker Highway between Lampton Avenue and Derwent Park Road was closed periodically over three hours while Crash Investigation and Forensic Services personnel investigated the crash.
At the time of the crash the weather was cloudy with occasional showers and road was dry. Excessive vehicle speed or the use of alcohol or drugs is not suspected as a contributing factor in the crash, however investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are continuing.
Crash investigators would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the Holden Captiva or the pedestrian around the time of the collision.
