Police investigate sexual assault at South Brisbane

Police have charged a 20-year-old man following the alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl on Macleay Island yesterday.

Just before 4.30pm yesterday afternoon, the girl exited a bus near Hamilton Parade where the man allegedly started to walk in the same direction as the girl and a short time later began to follow her.

It is alleged as the girl approached the intersection of Williams and Arthur streets, the man assaulted the girl and forced her into nearby bushland and sexually assaulted her.

When she regained consciousness, the girl resisted the man who ran off in an unknown direction. She raised the alarm and a nearby resident came to her aid.

The girl did not know the man.

He was later located in bushland off Cooee Crescent and arrested.

The 20-year-old Russell Island man has been charged with one count of rape and one count of disabling in order to commit an indictable offence. He is due to appear in Cleveland Magistrates Court today.
