Police launch investigation into armed robbery at Wollongong

Police are appealing for information following an armed robbery where a man was stabbed in Wollongong overnight.

About 11.20pm (Friday 12 March 2021) a 53-year-old man was walking with his female partner through the Wollongong CBD when another man approached them in Atchison Street, Wollongong.

A scuffle occurred between the two men, resulting in the man suffering a number of stab wounds.

The man then grabbed the victim's mobile phone and ran off towards Burelli Street.

Emergency services were called and the man was treated at the scene by Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Wollongong hospital for treatment. His injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

Officers from Wollongong Police District established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the incident.

As inquiries continue, police have released a description of a man who might assist with inquiries.

He is described as Caucasian in appearance, aged in his early 20s, wearing a black cap, black jumper and black tracksuit pants.

Police appeal to anyone who might have witnessed the incident or saw a man matching his description in Wollongong CBD and had dash cam footage, to come forward.
