Police Lay Arson Charges, Southport

Police have charged a 45-year-old man with arson following investigations into a boat fire at Southport yesterday, 2 January.

It will be alleged the man boarded the boat moored in the broadwater, adjacent to the North Street boat ramp around 3:30pm, before he lit it on fire.

The man then escaped the vessel, before swimming towards Wave Break Island.

Police attended the scene and took the man into custody a short time later. He was treated for minor burns to his face.

No one else was injured as a result of the fire, however the vessel was completely destroyed.

The 45-year-old Banora Point man has been charged with one count of arson.

He is expected to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today, 3 January.
