Police lay charges after juvenile justice centre riot - Kariong

Police are in the process of charging 21 people with riot after detainees of a juvenile justice centre committed serious offences on staff and other detainees within the centre at the weekend.

About 8pm on Saturday 21 July 2019, a riot erupted within the centre that required a significant and coordinated response from officers within the Northern Region.

Just before 5.30pm yesterday (Monday 22 July 2019), operatives from the Tactical Operations Unit and the Public Order and Riot Squad gained access to the roof of the facility, where the remaining detainees surrendered peacefully.

Local detectives established Strike Force Mittabah to investigate the assaults and are now in the process of charging a total of 21 people (five adults and 16 youths) with riot.

The adults will appear today (Tuesday 23 July 2019) at Gosford Local Court, while the youths will appear at Woy Woy Children's Court today.

Youth Justice NSW will continue to lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the disturbance.

Three men continue to receive medical treatment at Gosford Hospital; one man suffered stab wounds and a collapsed lung, another suffered head and facial injuries, and the third man suffered a fractured ankle.
