Police lay charges after man dies in hospital after assault at Queanbeyan

A man has been charged following the death of another man after an assault in Queanbeyan yesterday.

Just before 9.30am (Thursday 26 December 2019), emergency services responded to reports of an assault on Trinculo Place, under the Queens Bridge.

Officers from Monaro Police District attended and located a 46-year-old man, who was semi-conscious.

He was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene before being taken to Queanbeyan District Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he later died.

A crime scene was established on Trinculo Road, with a second crime scene established at a nearby hotel. Both were examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from Monaro Police District – assisted by detectives from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad – established Strike Force Jinalee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man's death.

Following inquiries, a 50-year-old man was arrested at a home on Lowe Street, Queanbeyan, just before 12.30am today (Friday 27 December 2019).

He was taken to Queanbeyan Police Station, where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, custody of knife in public place, and manslaughter.

The man was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court tomorrow (Saturday 28 December 2019).

Investigations are continuing.
