Police lay charges after Port Melbourne assault

Port Phillip Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following an assault in Port Melbourne on New Year's Day.

A 19-year-old Mernda man was arrested today and charged with a number of offences including reckless conduct endangering life, driving under the influence of drugs, possession of a drug of dependence and trafficking a drug of dependence.

The charges come following an alleged assault which saw a vehicle drive into a crowd of pedestrians on Beach Street about 11.20pm on 1 January.

Two females received minor injuries as a result of the incident.

The man is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates' Court this afternoon.
