A man has been charged following an investigation into a fire at a hotel at Marrickville earlier this week.
About 11.50pm on Monday 6 December 2021, emergency services were called to a hotel on the corner of Marrickville Road and Garners Avenue, following reports of a fire.
Officers attached to Inner West Police Area Command and Fire and Rescue NSW attended and found the two-storey brick building well-alight.
About 20 people – staff and patrons and two residents – were in the building when the fire broke out. They were evacuated with several being treated for the effects of smoke inhalation. The hotel cat died.
Firefighters contained the blaze, however, the building sustained extensive damage.
A crime scene was established and an investigation commenced into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Following inquiries, police attended a unit on Albermarle St, Newtown, about 8.30am today (Thursday 9 December 2021), where they arrested a 54-year-old man.
He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with destroy/damage property with intent to endanger life and dishonestly obtain property by deception.
The man was refused bail to appear at Newtown Local Court tomorrow (Friday 10 December 2021).
